Functional Dyspepsia (Non-Ulcer Dyspepsia)

by: Junji Takano

There may be many people who experienced unpleasant impression of stomach trouble and run to their family doctors, and asked inspection with endoscope (gastro-camera). But doctors found no abnormality and no ulcerous parts in the stomach. Yet, unpleasant impression in the stomach remains, having the leaning and nauseating effect of the stomach, and no appetite at all. Endoscopic inspection found no inflammation or abnormalities in the mucous membrane of the stomach.

What's wrong, then? What does make you feel non-ulcer dyspepsia?

Since several years ago, we understood that people who work hard and hold positions are usually restless and stressed and so the cause of dyspepsia.

Three years ago, my younger brother (67 years old now) started to complain his stomach problem. He has been a long time user of the PYRO-ENERGEN machine, but his stomach problems have never been eradicated. So he went to the hospital and his stomach was inspected but found nothing wrong with his stomach.

He suspected that it might be caused by helicobacter pylori, so the same hospital conducted a clinical test and found negative pylori bacteria.

His doctors suggested him to have some vacation for a while. All my brothers held a meeting to find a way to close his business office permanently. Then, in September 2007, he decided to end his business and retired from all his works. He moved from his big office condominium to a small and simple condominium located on the fifth floor where he can see the Yodo River and its bank where hundreds of cherry trees are planted. He jogs every early in the morning for about one hour around the riverbank. He claims that from the day he closed his business and retired from all his works, his appetite increased dramatically. He gained about 5 kilograms in weight and his non-ulcer dyspepsia disappeared. He claims that his frozen shoulder also disappeared. He claims that his symptoms like that of chronic fatigue syndrome also disappeared. He now claims that all his maladies were caused by stress and overwork. From his physical records, we can think that many maladies we experience might be caused by some kind of stress and overwork.

How does non-ulcer dyspepsia occur then?

The word dyspepsia comes from the Greek "Dys-" meaning hard or difficult, and "Pepse", meaning digestion. Many people get dyspepsia. Dyspepsia is often caused by lifestyle factors such as smoking, kind of work, and eating habits, but there are some serious causes such as cancer of the stomach, peptic ulcer and some medications. When people have dyspepsia but no risk factors for any of the serious causes, it can be labeled "undifferentiated dyspepsia" and treated without further investigations. When people have been investigated for dyspepsia but no cause has been found it can be labeled as "functional dyspepsia".

It may be necessary to refine and study once again what we said and what we researched to make the statements we made to be true to all. Does stress really cause dyspepsia? Does stress really make you sick? Anyway, there is no one who denies it.

How does stress cause dyspepsia symptoms?

Once you have some problems or stress, the stomach function decreases its motion. In other words, the stomach is just like rubber, expanding and contracting, and digesting the food, sending it out to the small intestine. But the said function had stopped expanding and contracting well. What is the cause of it? Is it really stress? Yes, it maybe. Of course, there may be other reasons such as overfatigue, irregular food intake, and too much alcohol intake.

Such symptoms are named as NON-ULCER DYSPEPSIA. Also, there is a symptom of what we call "heartburn". Usually, heartburn occurs when gastric acid runs backward, which means from stomach to gullet. These occurrences are sometimes difficult to diagnose even by experienced doctors.

Now, you may say that you knew all of these statements, but don't you know that a simple dyspepsia symptom you feel could be a dangerous sign for another malady? A popular American medical magazine reported that there are new types of dyspepsia. It says that you just look at your stomach through an endoscope or ultrasound, then you will get well. Is this true?

Until recently, we thought that the feeling of heavy stomach is caused by too much eating or some kind of stopping or resting of the stomach function. To find the cause, we tried to investigate the stomach function using endoscope on several volunteers, and let them drink water. Then, we understood that there were people who easily felt heavy stomach although no defects or problems are found.

According to a doctor who was in charge of the clinical test told us that the volunteers, who felt heavy stomach or dyspepsia, were because their stomach overworked. What does overwork of stomach mean?

The average quantity of gastric acid produced by an average person is about 2 liters a day. The stomach muscle and the gastric acid mash the food you eat, and the food is sent to the small intestine. The answer to overworking stomach is either one of them. When the stomach muscle has fatigue symptoms, then it will not digest the food well. Sometimes, gastric acid goes to the small intestine ahead of the food before digesting it. We believe that they are the main reasons of dyspepsia.

To verify the definite answer, we inserted an endoscope to several volunteers, and manually poured synthetic gastric acid to their small intestines. There we found that the stomach function of very healthy and gluttonous volunteers suddenly stopped. All of them felt no appetite and heavy stomach, although their stomachs were empty. This is the new type of dyspepsia modern medical science found about three years ago.

Our stomach has gastric acid that digests the food we eat. It is a very strong acid consisting mainly of hydrochloric acid. When the food is sent to the small intestine, the acid goes together with it. If the acid flows continuously to the intestine, the intestine will have some damages on the surface. To avoid such damages, the intestine is made to produce alkaline materials that neutralize the area.

However, sometimes, its neutralizing system goes wrong due to some unwanted food intake such as overeating, overdrinking, or other toxicities. When such incident happens, the intestine sends signal to the brain to control the stomach function. This function is called dyspepsia. Of course, the clinical definition of dyspepsia is unclear up to now. Unlike stomach cancer and ulcer, the function of stomach just stop and make you feel unpleasant, which is called non-ulcer dyspepsia. This will then create true stomach illness later on.

What is the cause of such non-ulcer dyspepsia?

Medical findings for non-ulcer dyspepsia are more on stress and imagination. Do you believe it?

Stress or pressure to your mind causes dyspepsia and creates some bad effect.
Stress causes some kind of sense to your mind (brain) that will create more stress, and the stress will send a signal to your stomach as dyspepsia.
Stress makes dyspepsia, and feeling of dyspepsia creates more stress. We call this the "vicious circle of stress".

Most patients who consulted doctors were informed that there was nothing wrong with their stomach. Moreover, when the ultrasound results or endoscope results on the screen were shown to them, they were convinced and got well instantly. Do you believe that they got well just by means of seeing their stomach in front of their eyes on the screen?

In fact, ultrasound viewing have been practiced since a long time ago, however, patients were not explained seeing the result on the screen. Today, doctors realized that patients should see their own stomach, so that they will get well instantly, if it is non-ulcer dyspepsia.

Conclusion: For unpleasant impression of stomach troubles, run to your family doctors, and ask clinical diagnosis or inspection with endoscope. If your doctors found nothing wrong with your stomach, then the cause of your stomach trouble is probably just stress.

TRIVIA

In the article "Sprouts, Why Do They Call It Wonder Food? – Part II", I wrote that by means of wearing blue sunglasses or eyeglasses whenever you eat meals will reduce your weight without any heavy effort. You can reduce your weight as heavy as 10 kg (22 lbs.) in a month period. Try it. No side effects at all.

Today, we tell you to change the outdoor light to blue color. You can use blue fluorescent lamp or blue LED light, instead of white fluorescent or incandescent lamp. Did you know that the blue color reduces crime on the street, and the blue color makes people calm and businesses will prosper more?

Many streets in cities in Japan are now replacing outdoor night-lights to blue fluorescent lamp or LED light. Studies reported that crimes in these areas reduced dramatically and businesses are prospering greatly.

Can you answer the above reasons why?

We do not recommend wearing blue sunglasses during daytime in summer. To protect the eye from ultraviolet rays of the sun, use brown eyeglasses instead.
