Ban on Trans Fats
A big surprise, New York passed a ban on trans fats. An impact of the ban prohibiting the use of trans fats for all restaurants and fast food outlets. And of course it affected many other business establishments. Some parts of Japan are also considering not to use oils containing trans fats. Since this news has been circulating around the world, the word "Trans Fats" is becoming a household name.

I myself did not know about trans fats until some news came to my desk several years back. Surprisingly, I have been eating foods containing trans fats since I was born for over 63 years. When I was a small boy, I was so skinny due to lack of food, especially during WWII. I was given jelly-ball oil extracted from whale as supplements for nearly 6 years. Yes, it was a jelly ball of trans fats.
Most trans fats consumed today are industrially created by partially hydrogenating plant oils. According to a history book I read, these fats have a higher melting point making it attractive for baking, and extending shelf life for finished products.
Unlike other dietary fats, trans fats are neither required nor beneficial for health. Eating trans fats increases the risk of coronary heart disease. For these reasons, health authorities worldwide recommend that consumption of trans fat be reduced to trace amounts. Trans fats from partially hydrogenated oils are generally considered to be more of a health risk than those occurring naturally. Cow's milk, meat, and mother's milk contains naturally occurring trans fats, although it is in small quantities.
We cannot stop the use of trans fats especially in Japan, China, many parts of Asian countries, African countries as well as European countries, notably in the fast food outlets and snack kiosks in short years. It may take another ten years or more to eliminate trans fatty oils from our cooking.
Eating trans fats increases cholesterol and the risk of coronary heart disease. According to some medical researchers, most modern heart-related diseases may be caused by trans fats. Yes, it may be very true according to the world health statistics. Well, what shall we do then?
