How to Overcome Dementia or Alzheimer's Disease - Part II

by: Junji Takano

I have written an article regarding dementia and Alzheimer's disease, which was posted on April 4, 2009. You can read the article on the link below: https://www.pyroenergen.com/articles09/dementia-alzheimers-disease.htm

Since then, we received a lot of valuable information from several researchers, which made it necessary for me to update the contents of the article to let you know that Dementia or Alzheimer's disease may be treated remarkably by a simple help within your family.

Even renowned doctors believe that the prevalence and incidence of dementia or Alzheimer's disease is growing among the old, and that there is no way to treat it. However, psychiatrists from various hospitals found that starting up simple conversations with patients can help them greatly.

One important thing that we've found was that most patients were silent persons who did not or do not talk with their family. In other words, an active and talkative person won't get such disease.

Somewhat believable?

Alzheimer's Disease

How to Know if One Has Such Symptoms

Simply ask them something about the latest news on TV or newspaper. If he or she can answer it simply, then they are OK.

If they have difficulties in answering this question, then be warned. There's a tendency that they're at risk of the said disease, according to data gathered from several informants.

How You Should Take Care of Dementia Patients

Dementia or Alzheimer's symptoms can be dramatically improved using new care techniques that can be done just within the family circle.

Forgetting things, wandering, delusions, and rants, are some of the common symptoms of dementia and Alzheimer patients. These symptoms are great burden among the entire family physically and mentally. Government health authorities are trying to establish care centers for them, but our idea is not a care center. Our idea and studies focus mainly on how to lessen or reduce such patients.

While I was interviewing several families and dementia patients, we came to understand some common misunderstanding between patients and caretakers. Caretakers think that patients do not know anything about the hardship of the family. Caretakers think that dementia cannot be treated and that there is no hope of recovery. I can tell you that that's not true.

Let's take a case of an old woman who is diagnosed with dementia. She became forgetful. She became incapable of going for shopping. She became incapable in cooking and in many other activities.

If you are the caretaker, then you will certainly have to go for shopping. You will have to cook, and you will have to let the patient try to remember forgotten memories. Here, we came to understand that nearly all patients will think that they are being treated with ignorance or no acquaintance.

For instance, if a patient does not do or cannot do a kind of cooking, of course, you may say that "Oh, yes, I will do it for you", then, the patient will think that "Yes, you are thinking that I am an ignorant person" or "You do not like my cooking".

Patients always think in negative way.

And that makes a distance between you and the patient for each occasion and each day.

It's important that a caretaker must always approach with a smile, and say "Will you help me in cooking?", "What is your favorite cook?" Then, patients will think and answer you. Say it and do not forget a big smile, always.

Dementia

Emotion Is Very Important

Dealing and communicating with a dementia patient with warm and supportive care is the number one point for recovery. For example, let's show three pictures to a dementia patient. One picture is with smile, another one is with angry face, and last one is with sad or surprised face. You'll notice that patients can only answer for the picture of smile. From this, we understand that patients can answer only to the people with smile.

If there will be a good communication with patients, then, it is the starting point for recovery.

After a few months of undergoing with the said trials, you may not believe it, but according to some studies, nearly 80% of dementia patients were at least considered independently capable without any helpers or supporters.

Try the above for yourself if you have a dementia patient near you. For sure, it will help you a lot. Good luck.
